Richmond is the capital of Virginia, a designation that has been in place since 1780. The city was chosen for its strategic location along the James River, which facilitated trade and access to the interior of the state. Richmond also played a significant role during the American Civil War, serving as the capital of the Confederacy. Its historical significance is reflected in the many monuments and sites located in and around the city.

Norfolk, Charlottesville, and Virginia Beach, while notable cities in Virginia, do not hold the title of capital. Norfolk is known for its naval base and waterfront, Charlottesville is renowned for its historical significance and as the home of the University of Virginia, and Virginia Beach is famous for its coastal resort area. However, none of these cities serve as the administrative center of the state, which is firmly established in Richmond.
